Reinventing the Wheel Crochet Trivet

Linked double crochet stitches give this crochet trivet pattern a dense yet flexible texture. Made in cotton yarn, it works equally well as a trivet or a washcloth. It works up quickly too, in only 7 rounds!

Fiber choice for trivets and hotpads

If you will be using this trivet under anything hot, avoid using any yarn with acrylic or other synthetic materials in it. These yarns will melt with heat, and could damage surfaces or even be dangerous. Cotton is a great choice for a hotpad/trivet and is also perfect for a washcloth. Wool yarn, particularly non-superwash wool, is insulating and stands up nicely to heat as well.

Some dyes can also cause an issue if they transfer with heat and/or moisture. For safety, always test your trivet before trusting it. Place a paper towel under it the first time, to ensure it won’t melt or transfer color, before using it on its own.

Linked Double Crochet

Linked double crochet stitches create a fabric that is more dense than traditional double crochet, but not quite as stiff as single crochet. Each stitch links to the horizontal bar at the middle of the previous stitch. See this Linked Double Crochet Tutorial for a closer look.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, ldc in same st, ldc in next 2 sts, (2 ldc in next st, ldc in next 2 sts) around, join with sl st in first st and change to B. (48 sts)

Border

Rnd 5: With B, ch 3, ldc in same st, ldc in next st, place marker in last st made, ldc in next 2 sts, (2 ldc in next st, ldc in next 3 sts) around, join with sl st in first st and change to A. (60 sts)

Rnd 6: With A, ch 3, ldc in same st, ldc in next 4 sts, (2 ldc in next st, ldc in next 4 sts) around, join with sl st in first st and change to B. (72 sts)

Rnd 7: With B, ch 3, ldc in next 2 sts, lsdtr in marked st from Rnd 5, (ldc in next 6 sts on current rnd, sk next 4 sts on Rnd 5, lsdtr in next st on Rnd 5) around to last 3 sts on current rnd, ldc in last 3 sts, join with sl st in first st, fasten off. (84 sts)

Finishing

To make starting ch-3 of each rnd less noticeable, use tails to sew a horizontal bar in matching color across middle of each starting chain, and sew any remaining gaps closed. Use long starting tail for center portion of trivet.
